History of the military camp

History of the Academy

The Camp “Velissariou Ioannis” is located next to the port of the city of Chalkida and near the bridge of the Evripos Strait with the well-known tidal phenomenon.
The foundation stone of the buildings of the School’s Camp was laid in early December 1909 and its construction was completed in 1912.
It was initially used as a concentration centre for Turkish prisoners of the Greek-Turkish war of 1912-13 and then for the recruitment of various units of our Army until 1947, when the Infantry School was established.
The name of the Camp was given in honor of Major Infantry Velissariou Ioannis, a native of Kymi in Euboea, known from the occupation of the city of Ioannina, Hero of the Balkan Wars 1912 – 1913.
